Originally broadcast on BBC1 in August 1999, it's a drama about four men who take out a life insurance policy together

Finally, Colin's gig with the NDR Big Band at the Queen Elizabeth Hall was very good. The bill was shared between Colin and Mike Gibbs, with Colin doing the first half of the show. Colin's spot lasted about an hour, in which time they played:

  • Heated Think Tank (from Another Think Coming)
  • I Am The Walrus (from Another Think Coming)
  • Prayer (from Another Think Coming)
  • Lost In The Stars (from The Theatre Of Kurt Weill)
  • My Ship (from The Theatre Of Kurt Weill)
  • Mack The Knife (from The Theatre Of Kurt Weill)
  • Roaring At The Savoy (from Another Think Coming)
The house was packed and the band got a great reception when they finished. I personally prefer the Mask Orchestra playing this material, but it was nice to see the world renowned NDR Big Band in action. The show, in association with BBC Radio 3, was recorded. Mike Gibbs' performance is due to be broadcast (as part of a double bill) on BBC Radio 3 on Monday 19th November at 19.30. Colin's performance with the NDR Big Band has yet to find a place on the BBC's schedules!

See you next time........

Guest House Paradiso will be shown on MovieMax3 on Tuesday 6th November at 22.00

The second (and concluding) part of the pilot episode of Waking The Dead will be screened on BBC1 on Sunday 4th November at 21.00

I think an apology is due for giving you a bum-steer recently. If you watched the first episode of the new four-part Dalziel And Pascoe, you will have noticed that Colin did NOT write the music to that episode. Having checked with Towns Towers I have now been reliably informed that Colin did write the music for the production, but only for 2 of the episodes. Which 2 they are I have no idea! I suppose you'll just have to watch the remaining 3 episodes to find out! Episode 2 ('Home Truths') will be shown on BBC1 on Monday 5th November at 20.30, episode 3 will be broadcast the following week on BBC1 on Monday 12th November at 20.30

Colin has been recently recording idents for the new UK Food Channel and the music to a new feature film called Rocket Post. More details when I get them........

For those of you living in Holland (or who can receive the channel via cable or satellite) you can catch the first episode (of 3) of Imogen's Face on Holland's national TV on Sunday 11th November at 19.33 (local time). Thanks to Carl Vanempten for the info

Don't forget, this coming weekend (Saturday 10th November) Mike Gibbs and Colin Towns will be joined by the NDR Big Band for the London premiere of Nonsequence (Gibbs) and Another Think Coming (Towns) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank

'Til the next time..........

21st October 2001:

The credits to the new Mask Orchestra album Another Think Coming have now been added to the site, as too have the credits to Angelina Ballerina (in the 'Animations' section). Anyone interested in the latter may find this site interesting....!

Adios.......

At long last ITV are ready to show Angelina Ballerina, a 26-part children's animation about a ballet-dancing mouse and her friends! Latest news is that the album will now include an enhanced video track of the Mask Orchestra performing Bolt From The Blue

See you soon.......

Take care.......

16th September 2001:

What can I say? The last week has been a pretty strange time for us all, no matter where we live in the world. Like me, many people have not taken it all in yet. Such terrible acts of terrorism on a monstrous scale. And for what?

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved in the immediate impact of these senseless acts of violence, to the victims, their families, relatives and friends. I have no answers, just grief..........

Getting It Right can be seen on Carlton Cinema on Thursday 20th September at 23.00

Cadfael shows up on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday 16th September at 18.30 in 'The Potter's Field' and again on 23rd September at 18.30 in 'Pilgrim Of Hate'

Finally, Guest House Paradiso will be shown on MovieMax5 on Tuesday 18th September at 22.30

I'm afraid the Colin Towns 'questions and answers' session will have to wait until the next time. Sorry

Take care.......

31st August 2001:

Little happening again this week by way of TV programmes, except for our two current favourites:

Cadfael can be seen on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday 9th September at 18.30 in 'The Holy Thief'

Guest House Paradiso will be shown on MovieMax3 on Sunday 9th September at 22.00

However, there's a bit of news concerning Colin's current jazz forays - more details of which can be found on his great Provocateur Records site

As mentioned last time, the latest album from Colin Towns’ Mask Orchestra is due for release on 15th October 2001. Titled Another Think Coming (PVC1028), the album features eight new Colin Towns’ compositions plus a brilliant arrangement of John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s I Am the Walrus - I've seen it live and it's fabulous! The album also includes an unconventional reading of Reverie by French composer Claude Debussy. The album itself was recorded during July 2001 - just days after the Mask returned from their highly acclaimed performance at the Getxo Festival in Spain

Striking while the iron's hot, Mike Gibbs and Colin Towns will be joined by the NDR Big Band on Saturday 10th November for the London premiere of Nonsequence and Another Think Coming at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank. As with last year, Provocateur Records will be co-sponsoring the London Jazz Festival in November

Finally, Colin Towns has just completed the string arrangements for Shadows In The Rain, the new album from the internationally renowned saxophonist and NDR Big Band member Christof Lauer. The album will be released on the ACT label in October

Next time, I'll be putting up the answers to the questions posed to Colin back in April / May this year! He's just finished answering 'em, so I'll find a place for 'em on the site when I can get the chance. Something to look forward to, eh?

Bye for now........

26th August 2001:

There's not a great deal happening this week on TV except for the following 2 bits of info:

Cadfael can be seen on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday 2nd September at 18.30 in 'The Raven In The Foregate'

Guest House Paradiso will be shown on MovieMax5 on Saturday 1st September at 22.00

Well, I managed to make it to the Mask's gig at Coventry on Saturday 25th August. The Belgrade Theatre is a great little venue and suited the Orchestra perfectly - not too big yet intimate. The band, conducted by Colin, did 2 spots

The first hour showcased several new tracks from the forthcoming Mask album (more of that later), namely Another Think Coming, Think Tank, a superb rendition of the Beatles' classic I Am The Walrus, Prayer and a few other new tracks, finishing with Roaring At The Savoy. Mmmmmm, nice!

After the customary intermission, Colin led the boys straight into the UK premier of nine new arrangements of the music of Kurt Weill (as per the album). To end the night and by way of an 'encore', we were treated to a lively version of Bolt From The Blue (from the first Mask album). Grooooovy!

In all, I counted 19 musicians on stage (20 if you include Colin himself), many of which are household names in UK jazz circles (e.g. Guy Barker, Alan Skidmore, Ian Thomas, Peter King, Mark Nightingale, Nigel Hitchcock and Phil Todd - the same fella who plays the sax on the 'Pie In The Sky' theme music). Colin appeared to have had an enjoyable time of it all, and the orchestra were enthusiastic and as tight as ever. The appreciative audience wanted more, but as the house lights went up the only decent thing left to do was to head directly for the nearest pub to conduct your own 'inquest' of the show. There aren't many better ways to spend a Saturday night in Coventry........Mmmmmmmmmm! Really nice!

Lastly, I found the following advert at the show detailing the next Mask Orchestra album. More info when I get it...........

An advert for the new Mask Orchestra album - Another Think Coming

19th August 2001:

What's this, two news up dates in one week? Well, yes it's true!

  • episode 1 on Wednesday 29th August at 20.05, repeated later in the early hours of Thursday 30th August at 02.30
  • episode 2 on Wednesday 29th August at 23.10, repeated later in the early hours of Thursday 30th August at 03.30

Deceit makes a welcome return to UK Drama. Both episodes will be shown back-to-back on Tuesday 28th August at 22.00, repeated later in the early hours of Wednesday 29th August at 02.35

Finally, just a further reminder that if you want to see Colin 'in the flesh', he and his Mask Orchestra will be appearing at the Coventry Jazz Festival next weekend (Saturday 25th August)

The following information has been lifted directly from a Press Release issued on 10th July:

UNMASKING THE ORCHESTRA

Coventry Jazz Festival is to host a UK premiere by Colin Towns' Mask Orchestra in August

The Mask Orchestra's Kurt Weill arrangements have never before been heard in the UK and will be played for the first time as part of Coventry Jazz Festival at the city's Belgrade Theatre on 25 August

Towns' powerful and dramatic one-off performance will contain an hour of specially arranged Kurt Weill pieces - including jazz standards such as Mack the Knife and Speak Low

The line-up for the Orchestra contains some of the most exciting jazz soloists in the country including, Henry Lowther, Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, Peter King, Alan Skidmore, Julian Argüelles, John Paricelli and Paul Clarvis

Colin Towns said, 'Last year the NDR band in Germany asked me to rearrange Kurt Weill pieces for a CD and also for concerts. It is a great honour that the Coventry Festival have made it possible for the Mask Orchestra to perform this music in England for the first time. The pleasure is all ours'

The second hour of the Mask Orchestra's set will consist of previously unreleased Mask Orchestra tracks and pieces from the 'Dreaming Man with Blue Suede Shoes' Album

Colin Towns started his career as a film and TV composer. The death of his wife Jan from cancer spurred him on to realise his ambition to write for a jazz orchestra, resulting in his work with the Mask Orchestra

The Mask Orchestra is one of the acts booked for the six-day Coventry Jazz Festival (August 22-27) which also includes Courtney Pine, Tommy Smith, Tim Garland and Kenny Ball

Free programmes and festival tickets are available from Coventry Tourist Information Centre 024 7622 7264, email jazz@coventry.org. For Mask Orchestra tickets call the Belgrade Box Office on 024 7655 3055

I might see you at the weekend..........

14th August 2001:

Sorry if the following information is a bit out of date, but I've been experiencing a spot of trouble uploading my files to the website, and thus there has been a big(ish) delay in posting the latest news (does that make sense??!!). Finally, I've got a real apology to make. Yes, I've made a bit of a boob and gave all of you a bum-steer. Colin didn't actually write the music to the current series of Waking The Dead. I assumed that since he'd done the score for the pilot episodes last year that he'd be in the running to do the new episodes too! I was wrong. Naturally, I've since beaten myself about the head with a rolled up newspaper while listening to Hear'Say - I think that's sufficient punishment, don't you?

Enjoy the sun while you can. See ya..........

  • part 2: Tuesday 3rd April at 21.00, later repeated in the early hours of Wednesday 4th April at 01.15

I have it on good authority that Nicholas Nickleby (featuring Colin's music) will be screened soon on ITV, so keep your eyes peeled for that one

Regarding Colin's theatre work, he was responsible for the music to the recent Theatr Clywd production of King Lear (February 2001), and is soon to begin work on the music for the stage production of Ben Elton's book Inconceivable, due to open in Leeds in May 2001. As you may already know, Colin did the music to the film version of the same novel (Maybe Baby)

I've now updated the Gillan Days section of the site. It now includes most, if not all, of the Gillan singles, LPs and CDs. The images are either missing or fairly poor quality, but I'll soon have that sorted!!

Two great new pieces of news!! Firstly, I'll hopefully be running a competition in the very near future. At this stage I'm not quite sure what the prize will be, but it may well be a signed copy of the Catherine Cookson Collection. More details in the next week or two

Secondly, and more importantly, Colin has kindly agreed to do an interview for this site (yes......I was out cold for about three days when I found out!). Anyway, apart from all the things I wish to ask him, I thought it would be a neat idea to ask the visitors to the site (all both of you!) to submit any burning questions you may have. I suggest you limit you questions to 3 per person. I'll then pick the best and attempt to get them answered

Hoping to hear from you soon.........
