23rd December 2000:

More Vampire's Kiss! It will be shown on MovieMax1 in the early hours of Saturday 6th January 2001 at 01.20; and on MovieMax3 in the early hours of Thursday 11th January 2001 at 00.05

More Cadfael too! The Hallmark Channel are showing an episode on Saturday 30th December at 21.00 (title not given); and another episode (The Leper Of St Giles) on Saturday 6th January 2001 at 21.00

And more Beatrix Potter as well! BBC1 is to show The Tale Of Samuel Whiskers on Monday 1st January 2001 at 07.25. Are you really going to be up that early in the morning after all the celebrations from the night before? Set the VCR instead, methinks......

And finally, Pie In The Sky returns to our screens! Titled 'Money Talks', this is the first episode of the third series, and was not originally broadcast when UK Gold re-ran the series back in October this year. Whether this is just a 'one-off' or that they intend to show the whole of series 3 still remains a bit of a mystery. I wonder if Cadfael can help us solve this one......?

All the best for Xmas and the New Year. See you in 2001!

19th December 2000:

To start with, the final episode of A Dinner Of Herbs (part 6) will be shown on the ITV network on Sunday 24th December 2000 at 21.30

Next, The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase will be shown the TV cable channel Carlton Cinema at 09.00 on Thursday 28th December 2000. Sadly I've not got cable, so I'll not be able to see this!

Thirdly, Vampire's Kiss will be shown on MovieMax1 at 01.25 (in the early hours of Sunday 24th December)

Fourthly, Money Kings will be shown on Premier2 in the early hours of Friday 22nd December at 03.20

Cadfael returns to the Hallmark Channel (Sky digital only?) at 20.30 on Saturday 23rd December. No title given, so that narrows it down to only one of 13 episodes!!

Beatrix Potter's The Tailor Of Gloucester will be shown at 08.35 on BBC1 on Tuesday 26th December 2000. The animation is gorgeous, and Colin's music is simply the 'icing on the cake'. Not to be missed.......

Lastly, the long wait for The Sleeper is now over. This two-part 'blackly humourous chiller' stars Anna Massey, George Cole, Michelle Collins (yummy!), Ciaran Hinds and Eileen Atkins and will be broadcast on BBC1 as follows:

  • part 1: Tuesday 26th December at 21.15
  • part 2: Wednesday 27th December at 21.05

The blurb describes it as 'a traditional Christmas family gathering in a remote farm house which is interrupted when rain and gales cut off the power, imprisoning the family members. A figure from the past makes her way to the isolated farm. Restless spirits and dark secrets are coming back to haunt them'. Spooky or what? I'm not gonna watch this on my own, are you?

14th December 2000:

News is a bit thin on the ground again this week. The only info is......

Firstly, part 4 of A Dinner Of Herbs will be broadcast on the ITV network on Friday 15th December 2000 at 21.30. Part 5 will be shown the following Friday 22nd December at 21.30

Secondly, Sky Premier2 will be showing Money Kings in the early hours of Friday 22nd December at 03.20

Thirdly, and lastly (!!), Vampire's Kiss will be shown on MovieMax5 at midnight on 15th December 2000

As this may be the last message of this year (although it may not be - I've yet to check the Xmas and New Year schedules!!) I'd like to wish you all a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year

1st December 2000:

The second episode of A Dinner Of Herbs will be broadcast on the ITV network on Friday 1st December 2000 at 21.30. Part 3 will be shown the following Friday at 21.30

The credits to A Dinner Of Herbs have now been added to the Mini-series section; info on The Theatre Of Kurt Weill added to the UK Discography and Jazz music sections

The Guest House Paradiso video will include the Guest House Paradiso soundtrack for free at Woolworths this Christmas. Good, or what......?

Finally, I hope you like the new-look site

23rd November 2000:

Colin is currently working on the animation Angelina Ballerina (in 26 parts) and an adaptation of Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby (in 2 parts, starring Charles Dance, Gregor Fisher and Pam Ferris). Can't wait.......

And don't forget that this Friday (24th November) a new 6-part Catherine Cookson begins on the ITV network at 21.30. Called A Dinner of Herbs, it stars Billie Whitelaw, Jonathan Kerrigan and Melanie Clark Pullen and is Colin's 9th Cookson adaptation

Vampire's Kiss is on yet again, this time on MovieMax5 in the early hours of Monday 27th November 2000 at 01.35

Stark is back! It's to be shown on UK Drama as follows:

  • episode 1: at 23.00 on Monday 27th November, later repeated in the early hours of Tuesday 28th November at 02.50.
  • episode 2: at 23.00 on Tuesday 28th November, later repeated in the early hours of Wednesday 29th November at 02.55.
  • episode 3: at 23.00 on Wednesday 29th November, later repeated in the early hours of Thursday 30th November at 02.55.

Well, I'm fresh back from seeing Bernie Tormé in Ashton under Lyne, Manchester. The weather was dreadful - the rain just kept coming down all night. But I got there eventually, ably assisted by my 3 co-drivers Mark, Dave and Dom

The boys hit the stage around 22.30, and straight into Wild West. The show was great, with the boys belting out strong versions of Ghost Walking, Howling At The Moon, Star, Turn Out The Lights, Chasing Rainbows, Rat, River, Lonesome Train, Gillan's No Easy Way and Trouble, Sex Pistol's Pretty Vacant and Hendrix's Purple Haze

The songs were not necessarily played in that order, and there were others not mentioned above - my memory's not the same as it was! Needless to say, it was a blinding set and the band were extremely competent and tight. Highlight of the night had to be the dancing 'Charlie Chuck' twins - were you inhaling any funny stuff lads?!?! Check Bernie's site now and get your hands on some classic albums

I managed to have a chinwag with Bernie, Simon and John pre-gig. Thanks for your time fellas, very glad to have chatted to you. Cheers too to Rob, the roadie / driver / tour manager / lighting technician / merchandise co-ordinator (the list goes on......). Why not check out his sites, dedicated to Thunderstick and Samson?

'Til the next time..........

15th November 2000:

Ever wondered where you could get some of Colin's releases? If that's you then you might be interested in the following press release from PROVOCATEUR RECORDS, which I received recently. It says:

"Provocateur Records have set up an online credit card ordering service on the website:

www.provocateurrecords.co.uk

You can order any of our extensive and varied catalogue at a price lower than retail outlets. Delivery in the UK will have no postage and packaging charge and we aim to provide the order within 3-4 days. There is also a tracklisting and sample tracks on the site to give you a taster of what you can buy

The UK price per album is: £11.99 (sampler album 'Provocation' is: £3.99).

Alternatively, you can still use the mail order service by sending a cheque for £12.99 per album (£4.99 for 'Provocation')

You can also find out about current tours, gigs, info on artists, competitions and new releases on the website."

Great news for those of you who still have a few gaps in your collections! And while talking about Provocateur, they are part sponsoring the London Jazz Festival, which kicked off last week. There's still time to catch John Taylor on Friday 17th, and Andy Sheppard on Saturday night 18th November

Not one to let the dust settle, Colin's off again to Germany this week for the Westerstede Festival on 17th November. More Kurt Weill, methinks

He's also just finished A Dinner of Herbs, the latest adaptation of a Catherine Cookson novel (in 6 parts apparently!), which will be premiered on ITV starting Friday 24th November at 21.30

And now, for the last word on The Scarlet Pimpernel. I've checked with Towns Towers who have told me that Colin did not end up working on said production. To those of you who have had many a sleepless night since I first reported it, I cannot apologise enough.......

Vampire's Kiss is on again, this time on MovieMax5 in the early hours of Wednesday 21st November 2000 at 01.40

Finally, I'm off to see Bernie Tormé at Witchwood, Ashton under Lyne (near Manchester) on 16th November. See you there.......

7th November 2000:

Still not much happening! I've only got news of two films which will be shown in the next week or two. The first is Vampire's Kiss, which will be aired on MovieMax3 in the early hours of Saturday 12th November at 01.20. The second is The Puppet Masters, to be screened on the terrestial channel Granada (part of the ITV network) on Wednesday 15th November at 23.30

Bye for now.......

29th October 2000:

Not much apparently happening in the next fews weeks. However, UK Drama finishes its run of The Buccaneers:

  • episode 4: Capture - Sunday 5th November at 21.00, repeated later in the early hours of Monday 6th November at 01.25. It will be repeated again on Thursday 9th November at 21.00, and later in the early hours of Friday 10th November at 01.15
  • episode 5: Plunder - Sunday 5th November at 22.05, repeated later in the early hours of Monday 6th November at 02.25. It will be repeated again on Thursday 9th November at 22.05, and later in the early hours of Friday 10th November at 02.15

To finish, Vampire's Kiss will be shown on MovieMax2 in the early hours of Monday 6th November at 02.10; while Money Kings (aka Vig) will be broadcast on Premier3 on Friday 10th November at 03.10. Both are SkyDigital channels

I hope to have more for you next time....

23rd October 2000:

Well, I guess I was right in thinking Colin did NOT score the music for the current BBC production of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Interestingly (in a dull, trainspotter kinda way!), credits for the programmes' incidental music goes to Mike Moran, the very guy Colin eventually replaced in the Ian Gillan Band, all those years ago! Who he, I hear you ask........?

And now ladies and germs, for the last time (at least for the present!), here's all the info on the final episodes of Pie In The Sky:

  • episode 4: Cutting The Mustard - early hours of Saturday 28th October at 00.40
  • episode 5: Return Match - early hours of Tuesday 31st October at 01.00

  • episode 7: In The Smoke - early hours of Thursday 2nd November at 00.35

Followers of Crow Road will be glad to hear that the fourth and final episode (Rory) will be shown on UK Drama on 28th October at 22.55, repeated later in the early hours of Sunday 29th October at 03.00

UK Drama continues to show The Buccaneers; details of which are:

  • episode 2: Conquest - Sunday 29th October at 21.00, repeated later in the early hours of Monday 30th October at 01.10. It will be repeated again on Thursday 2nd November at 21.00, and later in the early hours of Friday 3rd November at 01.10
  • episode 3: Ambush - Sunday 29th October at 22.05, repeated later in the early hours of Monday 30th October at 02.10. It will be repeated again on Thursday 2nd November at 22.00, and later in the early hours of Friday 3rd November at 02.10

UK Drama are to show another 'new' re-run. This time it's The Buccaneers, a five part series first shown on BBC1 way back in 1995. So far, I've only got details of the first episode, which is:

  • episode 1: Invasion - Sunday 22nd October at 21.00, repeated later in the early hours of Monday 23rd October at 01.05. It will be repeated again on Thursday 26th October at 21.00, and later in the early hours of Friday 27th October at 01.15

Stay tuned for further episode details.

BBC1 is set to show Space Truckers next Friday evening (actually the early hours of Saturday morning!) at 00.40

One last bit of info before I go. Watch out for 3 new episodes of The Scarlet Pimpernel, starting this week (Wednesday 18th October) on BBC1 at 20.30. I'm a bit confused about this one! Although Colin did not score the music for the original production shown on BBC at some point last year, I have it on good authority that he had completed work on a production called Scarlet Pimpernel by April this year. The latter may well be a film (as opposed to a TV series), but I guess that it's not. I suppose we'll just have to watch the programme on Wednesday to find out

7th October 2000:

For those of you desperate for the continuing exploits of Henry Crabbe(!!), UK GOLD is showing the final episode of the third series of Pie In The Sky, as follows:

  • episode 2: Devils On Horseback (part 2) - early hours of Wednesday 18th October at 01.20

Until the next time............

On a very different note, I managed to see Bernie Tormé and the Electric Gypsies at Warrington Parr Hall on Saturday. What a great gig, boys! I suggest that if he's playing near you any time, make every effort to get to the show. What a talented guy! I was also fortunate to meet him post-gig; what a smashing bloke. I shouldn't forget the other two band members too - hello John and the drummer (whose name escapes me at the moment!) Hi also to Ste, Mark and Dave (my mates). My ears are still buzzing.........

19th September 2000:

The Mini-series section has now been updated to include My Fragile Heart, shown on ITV recently

18th September 2000:

Ooooops! I wasn't expecting it, but did you manage to catch My Fragile Heart last night on ITV? It was the first of a 2-part thriller, starring Sarah Lancashire, Lorcan Cranitch, Nicholas Gleaves and Eva Pope. The second part will be screened tonight on ITV at 21.10 (UK time). As usual, Colin scored the music

17th September 2000:

UK GOLD is about to screen the second series of Pie In The Sky (Hard Cheese) in the early hours of Saturday 23rd September 2000 at 00.45 (UK time). The second episode (Brown Bread) will be shown in the early hours of Tuesday 26th September at 01.00; the third (The Policeman's Daughter) in the early hours of Wednesday morning 27th September at 00.35 and the fourth episode (The One That Got Away) in the early hours of Friday 29th September at 01.20. Presumably, the other episodes will follow in the next few weeks. I'll keep you informed......

And to finish, Vampire's Kiss will be shown again on Sky Digital's MovieMax5 in the early hours of Wednesday 20th September at 02.30, or MovieMax3 in the early hours of Tuesday 26th September at 01.00

12th September 2000:

The new album by Andy Sheppard (Dancing Man & Woman) has been added to the Guest Appearances section of the site. Why...? The connection is that Colin has co-produced the CD with Andy himself

The recently shown Waking The Dead has now been added to the Mini-series section of the site

3rd September 2000:

BBC1 is to premiere Waking The Dead on Monday and Tuesday (4th and 5th September 2000) at 21.30 both nights (UK time). It's billed as a two-part thriller, and stars Trevor Eve and Sue Johnson as members of a 'Cold Case' team investigating a five-year-old murder. Episode 1 will be repeated on BBC CHOICE on Wednesday 6th at 21.00, and episode 2 the following Wednesday (13th) at 21.00

I've also added a link to the Thunderstick WebSite. What's his connection with CT, you ask??!! Click here to find out...

UK DRAMA is re-running Sculptress, starting with episodes 1 and 2 on Monday 4th September 2000 at 21.00 and 22.00 respectively (repeated in the early hours of Tuesday 5th September at 01.05 and 02.00) - UK times. Episodes 3 and 4 will be shown on Tuesday 5th September at 21.00 and 22.00, repeated in the early hours of Wednesday 6th September at 01.05 and 02.00. If that wasn't enough, all 4 episodes can be seen back-to-back on Saturday 9th September starting at 21.00 (UK times), or the early hours of Sunday 10th September starting at 01.20. Phew!! Has everyone got that.....?

5th August 2000:

BBC1 is to show City Boy on Sunday 6th August at 07.25 (UK time)

Colin is set to do a few more concerts/festivals with German NDR Big Band in Germany in November this year. As with his recent German concerts (see previous news item), Colin will be conducting the big band in new arrangements of Kurt Weill compositions

Colin has been working on a collaboration with Andy Sheppard, as well as working with the Berlin Philharmonic on a project written by Colin called 'This Is Not A Magritte'. I have no further details on both these ventures at present. Stay tuned.......

23rd July 2000:

UK Drama (Sky Digital channel) will be showing STARK this week; episode 1 will be shown on Tuesday 25th July 2000 at 23.20 (UK time); later repeated at 03.35 in the early hours of Wednesday morning (26th July). Episodes 2 and 3 will be repeated in the early hours of Saturday morning at 01.05 and 02.05 respectively (29th July)

12th July 2000:

Essex Boys gets its nationwide cinematic release on Friday 14th July 2000, a gritty film about gangsters in Essex starring Sean Bean and Alex Kingston

Still trying to find the Catherine Cookson Music Collection Volume 1? What follows is a cautionary note. Having looked at the HMV on-line store, I was unable to locate the said soundtrack and made my way to my local HMV store (over 6 miles away!!) in order to secure a copy. I had to place a special order for the album, but within 4 days the CD had arrived at the store (excellent or what!?!?). I nipped in to town again and bought the CD (caution number 1: Check the price before ordering!). The CD cost me a staggering 16.99GBP!! I was numbed; I have never paid that sort of price for ANY CD album in my life. When I got home I dropped HMV an e-mail asking if the soundtrack was available via the on-line store. Yep, it was! (caution number 2: Don't do a search on Colin Towns - look for Catherine Cookson Collection instead). And it's only(!) 11.99GBP (p+p extra). Please learn from my mistake.......

To commerate the 100th anniversary of Kurt Weill's birth, Colin has been in Germany recently, conducting the NDR Big Band (7th and 8th July 2000 in Hanover) in new arrangements of Kurt's compositions. In conjunction with this anniversary a CD album has been released (in Germany only?) entitled NDR Big Band directed by Colin Towns - The Theatre Of Kurt Weill (label is ACT; catalogue number is ACT 9234-2). For more info have a look here

19th June 2000:

More on the Maybe Baby soundtrack. Virgin have released a soundtrack to the film, but as previously suggested, it is indeed a compilation album featuring tracks 'used in and inspired by the film'. Sadly, none of Colin's music is included on the final product

Good news for those who've missed any of the re-runs of Cadfael on the Hallmark channel - they're currently re-running the re-runs!! Tuesdays and Thursdays at 18.30; Wednesdays and Fridays at 11.30 (UK times)

Finally, the Catherine Cookson Music Collection Volume 1 has already been released. Armed with this info, off I trotted to HMV and Virgin megastores to try and order a copy. The helpful assistants checked their respective databases but to no avail. They had no record of any release date, past, present or future. So I trawled the internet, but again no luck. Confused or what?!? As a last resort, I checked with Towns Towers, who checked with somebody else. This 'somebody else' sent me the following explanation:

Due to the soundtrack's intensely North East flavour, both HMV and Virgin were only willing to allow the CD to be sold to North East shops. Hence you not being able to buy it in Liverpool

I've shown your email to HMV and the soundtrack has now been allowed to be ordered everywhere

Good news. The label/catalogue number is: POV1104, and not as mentioned previously. So what are you waiting for.......?

30th May 2000:

Maybe Baby gets its nationwide cinematic release on Friday 2nd June 2000. A soundtrack will also be released, but it looks like it's going to be a compilation album of songs used in the film. Alas, no new CT material for us to get worked up about!! If anyone knows differently.....

As for Cadfael (currently showing four times weekly on the new Sky Digital channel Hallmark), there doesn't appear to be any rhyme nor reason to the way it's being screened. Surfice to say, if you haven't tuned in yet, you've already missed Monk's Hood, The Leper Of St. Giles, The Sanctuary Sparrow, One Corpse Too Many and The Virgin In The Ice. Days and times are: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 18.30; Wednesdays and Fridays at 11.30 (UK times)

Finally, Catherine Cookson fans keep an eye open for the Catherine Cookson Music Collection Volume 1 (POV1101), to be released through Colin's soundtrack label POV Records fairly soon. I'm not aware of any release date yet, but when I do, you'll read it here first (possibly!!)

5th April 2000:

Colin is currently working on Scarlet Pimpernel, Waking The Dead and The Sleeper. As yet, I know nothing about these projects (whether they are TV productions or future cinema releases - who knows!!??). He's also working on 'Madame Tussaud's New York Exhibition'; but I'm sure you can figure out what that one's about yourself.......

Colin has completed the music to Maybe Baby (a film adaptation of Ben Elton's bestseller 'Inconceivable' starring Hugh Laurie and Jonna Lumley) and Essex Boys (a gritty film about gangsters in Essex starring Sean Bean and Alex Kingston); both of which are likely to be screened in cinemas nationwide some time in May 2000
