Pie In The Sky - episode titles & synopsis

There were five series of Pie In The Sky, Colin scoring the music to all five. Below are the titles and synopsis for each episode:

First Series

  • Episode 1 - The Best Of Both Worlds - Detective Inspector Henry Crabbe is about to retire and realise his own private dream - to open a restaurant. That is, if Assistant Chief Constable Freddy Fisher will let him

  • Episode 2 - The Truth Will Out - Fisher sends Crabbe to look for a missing policeman, when all Crabbe wants to do is get the restaurant ready for opening night

  • Episode 3 - An Innocent Man - Crabbe is alarmed when Fisher sends a surveillance team into the restaurant to catch one of Crabbe's regular customers in the act of bribing a member of the government

  • Episode 4 - Once A Copper - Fisher is away, so Crabbe can concentrate on preparing a special meal for some Japanses visitors. But an unwelcome face from the past takes Crabbe's mind off his cooking

  • Episode 5 - A Shot In The Dark - A small air-taxi firm exports British snails to France, but when one of the partners is murdered after a break-in, Crabbe suspects that the company may be involved in traffic of a different kind

  • Episode 6 - Undesirable Elements - A 'research' project cooked up by Fisher takes Crabbe to nearby Wychwold, to look into the death of an Asian businessman. Back at the restaurant, chef Steve is pursuing his own investigations

  • Episode 7 - Passion Fruit Fool - Crabbe is trying to perfect his sorbet recipe, but no one will leave him in peace. Alec at the local laundry has a problem with his girlfriend, and chef Steve keeps getting arrested

  • Episode 8 - A Matter Of Taste - Crabbe and his wife become involved in two very different scams in the wine trade - and both learn never to judge a wine by its label

  • Episode 9 - Who Only Stand And Wait - The discovery of a young girl's body, buried 18 years before, reopens a murder investigation which was originally handled by Fisher and Crabbe. Did they put the wrong man away?

  • Episode 10 - Endangered Species - Crabbe takes on conservationists who are trying to block the construction of a new motorway link

  • Episode 1 - Money Talks - Beleaguered Crabbe faces an under-staffed kitched at 'Pie', the wrath of ACC Fisher over a slow surveillance job, and angry letters from the bank. But some unexpected news means his dream of being a full-time chef could be in sight at last

  • Episode 2 - Game Pie - Tragedy strikes when there is an accident during a pheasant shoot on a country estate, and ACC Fisher himself is in the frame. It falls to Crabbe to check out the facts - can he save his boss's career and was it really an accident?

  • Episode 3 - Irish Stew - Bubbly Irishwoman Kit Kelly descends on Middleton with her boisterous family of brothers and her brand new husband, sexy ex-pat American writer Byron de Goris. They plan to take over 'Pie' for a traditional wedding feast - that is, until Margaret recognises Byron from her 60s Carnaby Street days

  • Episode 4 - Doggett's Coat And Badge - When a 'Pie' regular, Rider, is threatened by DCI Doggett, Crabbe is forced to intervene. He soon finds himself embroiled in an ancient squabble involving the infamous Razor Reg Costigan and his nemesis Striker of the Yard

  • Episode 5 - This Other Eden - When a spate of garden thefts hits Middleton, Fisher asks Crabbe to investigate, and forces him to team up with the National Horticultural Division

  • Episode 6 - Coddled Eggs - When Crabbe is dragged on to Operation Grabbitback, he has to cope with bossy Detective Superintendent Chalmers breathing down his neck. What's more, a picky food inspector is causing havoc at 'Pie'

Fourth Series
  • Episode 1 - Devils On Horseback (part 1) - Margaret drags Crabbe away for a day at the races with cider-making Bob Bishop, but when a stable lad is murdered Crabbe is on hand to investigate

  • Episode 3 - Chinese Whispers - Crabbe is worried when his local Chinese take-away seems to be the subject of racist attacks. Meanwhile at 'Pie', preparations are underway for the Great British Grub competition

  • Episode 4 - New Leaf - Crabbe's powers of persuasion are in demand when Fisher asks him to cook for a reluctant witness. Henderson is intimidated by a shady figure from his past

  • Episode 5 - Breaking Bread - Disaster strikes at the company lunch attended by Fisher and Margaret

  • Episode 6 - Gary's Cake - When there's an armed raid at 'Pie', sloppy Detective Sergeant Stringer is put on the case. He soon offends Margaret and makes a pass at Nicola, but he really has it in for Gary

Fifth Series
  • Episode 1 - Squashed Tomatoes - Crabbe is put in charge of a new Public Duties Squad, which sells its services to the private sector. He is joined by two constables, both of whom have been sidelined in the force, and the first assignment is guarding a new housing estate. Meanwhile, Gary and Margaret hold the fort at 'Pie' with a new waitress, and Henderson grows some tomatoes

  • Episode 2 - Ugly Customers - Crabbe and the Public Duties Squad are assigned to guard a squabbling jury holed up in the hotel from hell. Back at 'Pie' Sally is confronted by a tricky customer

  • Episode 3 - Pork Pies - When Margaret's friend Julia is whisked off her feet by a charming pilot, the Crabbes wonder if he is all he seems. Meanwhile, Crabbe is asked to guard a sausage factory

  • Episode 4 - Cutting The Mustard - When a police bigwig's son is beaten up at his public school by local youths, Crabbe is asked to look into security, but he is surprised to find himself delving into Fisher's dark past. Back at 'Pie', Gary's new mustard is creating a stir

  • Episode 5 - Return Match - With the hotly-contested league finally approaching, Fisher asks Crabbe to keep an eye on the police football ground. He also asks him to babysit an unconvincing undercover officer

  • Episode 6 - The Apprentice - A teenager cagey about his background begins work experience at 'Pie', and when Crabbe finds him sleeping in the henhouse, it is clear something is up

  • Episode 7 - In The Smoke - The Crabbes borrow a friend's London flat for a weekend, but they soon realise that he has disappeared in mysterious circumstances. Meanwhile, Gary and Sally are left in charge at the restaurant, with the help of two agency staff

  • Episode 8 - Smelling Of Roses - Crabbe has lost his sense of smell, Fisher is becoming obsessive, and a royal visit is expected at police HQ
